Crossing the M5 – by Toni Stuart
Toni Stuart is a South African award-winning poet and social commentator. On 23 May 2017 she spoke to us at UCT and in her talk she drew on her own experiences, using the M5 as a symbol of the barriers that exist between cultures in the City.
Through poetry and prose she highlighted the challenges faced in getting to know and understand one another better and described what it was like growing up in a traditionally non-white community and going to school in the ‘elite Southern Suburbs’. There was much debate, discussion, food for thought, and some wine tasting too!
