COSAT

The Centre of Science and Technology [COSAT], is a school for grades 8 to 12 that operates in Khayelitsha. The school creates a learning environment for students with leadership ability and a particular interest in Maths, IT and Science. COSAT has an excellent academic record, achieving a consistent 60% – 80% rate of matric exemptions for Mathematics and Science, and a commendable number of A-aggregates and subject distinctions. In 2017 their matric pass rate was 93.8%.

COSAT is the biggest township feeder school to local universities. On average 90% of COSAT matriculants enter courses at the University of Cape Town, Stellenbosch University, University of Western Cape and the Cape University of Technology.

In 2011, the Solstice Foundation provided funding for 5 learners to participate in COSAT’s ‘Get Building’ programme, and in 2015 and 2016 we increased this amount to R100,000 per annum to cover ten pupils. In addition to this, in 2015, one of our donors earmarked their donation of R42,500 to be given to SERI (which at the time was the NPO fundraising partner for COSAT).

We continue to find it enormously worthwhile to support this organization. It is well run and the dedication of the staff rubs off on the learners making them hungry for knowledge and bent on success with their academics. They are encouraged to dream big and one of the highlights of the year has been our visit and engagement with the learners that we sponsor. This is always a lively and interactive session as is apparent from the video footage that you can find on our Facebook page.

We currently support 2 cohorts of 5 learners going through the highschool system at COSAT where our bursaries cover a range of things such as uniforms, outings, transport and pastoral care.  During covid this has been extended to food parcels for the families of learners in need.
