Sporting Chance

Sport breaks down the barriers of generations, cultures, race, gender and income levels, and so in September 1990 Brad Bing chose to pursue his personal passion and launched his one-man cricket coaching clinics. Today Sporting Chance has grown into one of the leading sports coaching and development organisations in South Africa.

Sporting Chance’s philosophy is to get children off the streets, away from their computer games and TV’s and to instil in them a love of sport. With disciplined, structured coaching that strikes a balance between sports, academics, and “play”, Sporting Chance has developed some of South Africa’s most promising sportspeople.

The approach has been two-fold – setting up and running sport coaching and holiday clinics at schools in and around Cape Town and the conceptualisation and co-ordination of youth sport events.

Over the years The Solstice Foundation has donated monies raised at our Annual Golf Days to sports initiatives, and in particular to Sporting Chance. In March 2008 the Solstice Foundation funded a Cricket Clinic at the Nyanga Sports Club which was attended by about 230 children from nearby schools. The Clinic was set up by Sporting Chance and the kids were coached by community coaches trained by them.

During 2009 a rugby, soccer and hockey clinic was run by Sporting Chance, with Solstice funding.  Remaining funds were set aside to operate a further seven clinics during the first half of 2010 in the build up to the World Cup Soccer Finals.

The next Solstice Golf Day, held on 24th February 2011, raised almost R30 000, and most of this was handed over to Sporting Chance.

In 2012, we donated a further R20 000 to Sporting Chance and this was spent on sports equipment for their development school sports programmes at three schools in Khayelitsha.

We donated a further R20 000 per annum to Sporting Chance from 2013 – 2017 for their holiday sports clinics held in Khayelitsha, Macassar and Langa. About 360 children attend these clinics, thereby benefitting from a day’s exercise, excellent coaching and a meal. In addition to this, in 2017 we contributed to the cost of providing each participant in their Calypso Cricket Festival with a customized T-Shirt.
