Trinity
What started as an Early Learning Centre in Mitchells Plain, is now an integrated early childhood development centre and independent primary school. In general, the Cape Flats is a very hard place to be a child. Factors include high rates of physical and sexual violence, a lack of resources and inequality in levels of health, income and education. At Trinity, children enjoy thoughtful, innovative education that aims to transform lives and not just achieve good marks.
Starting from one preschool class in 2012, they have added a new grade every year, so that by 2021 they can grow to Grade 7. There are currently 75 learners from Grade RR to Grade 3, with 15 learners per class and one class per grade. In 2018 they will expand to 90 learners when they add Grade 4. It is a shining example of how much difference can be made by a few dedicated and passionate individuals who set about realizing their dream.
Families of the learners cover about 10% of the running costs, and with a new grade being added each year, there is another teacher’s salary, another classroom and the more resources required. The Solstice Foundation has been able to assist them since 2015, where, through the generosity of one of our corporate sponsors, we have been able to support them on a monthly basis. During the 2017 financial year our sponsorship amounted to R132,000.
