Origin of the name

The definition of the word Solstice is “Either of the times when the sun is furthest from the equator” and “The point in its elliptic reached by the sun at a solstice”.

There are two annual solstices – Summer (i.e. when the sun is furthest North from the Equator) and Winter (i.e. when the sun is furthest South from the Equator).

When setting up the Foundation, we chose the name “Solstice” as we felt it implied that point at which a change of direction is embarked upon and that it is a direction that, instead of taking one further away, returns one to the core. We felt that it could represent a turning point for many people who had drifted away from the concept of “charitable service” or who were looking for new direction in doing something to improve the circumstances of those less fortunate than ourselves.
