Holy Cross Children’s Home

Holy Cross is a residential facility caring for children and youth from 2 to 18 years of age. These children have been neglected in their home environment, taken out of that environment and placed at Holy Cross by the Social Services department. They are cared for by the Catholic sisters and other caregivers.

A program is followed where possible to reintegrate the child into his/her community. The children sleep in dormitories of approximately 18 children. During the day, they attend various schools depending on their needs. Holy Cross is housed in a large building off Modderdam Road.

The Solstice Foundation chose the Holy Cross Children’s home as one of the beneficiaries of the 2008 Annual Ball and assisted them with the purchase of new mattresses, waterproof sheeting, bedding for their beds, and funded repairs to the vehicle used to transport the children.

In 2009 further donations allowed us to repair and paint three dormitories and three toilets in the girls’ wing of the home, which were in a terrible state of disrepair and had damp coming in through the ceilings. And in 2010 a second phase of renovation took place where two dormitories and two bathrooms in the same wing received similar repairs and maintenance. This means that the entire wing has now been completed. The balance of these funds was used to put three 2009 matriculants, from Holy Cross, through a panel-beating course. This opportunity allowed these young matriculants to expand their skill-set and give them an opening into the working-world.
