The Salesian Institute

The Salesian Institute, established in 1910, is run by dedicated staff, and offers a range of projects for Youth at Risk, specifically youth who have been living on the streets. The School of Life Programme is one of the projects which the Salesian Institute has been running successfully for a number of years. This is an 18 month live-in programme aimed at male youths between the ages of 16 & 24, who are either living on the street or are involved in gangsterism, but who demonstrate a motivation to change their lives. The programme addresses the ever-present drug problem and covers occupational, educational and life skills, as well as attempting to integrate the youth into their communities, and place them in jobs.

The Don Bosco Hostel is home to these destitute youths while they attend the School of Life Programme. The communal area, specifically the kitchen urgently needed to be upgraded. The Solstice Foundation allocated part of the funds raised at the 2008 Annual Ball to the upgrading of the kitchen at the Don Bosco Hostel at the Salesian Institute. The kitchen, as in many homes, is the heart of the hostel, where the youth eat, and cook together in the evenings, and can relax, and perhaps find some solace. The full refurbishment was completed in early 2009 providing a new, clean and more modern facility for the Hostel.
