Indawo

Originally named Masizame (meaning “let us try”), this project was started by Muriel Hollow, a resident in Nyanga. Muriel despaired at the plight of under-nourished children left on the street or at home alone while their parents were working.

Originally Muriel was looking after the children from her shack, but in 2002 she managed to secure a piece of land very close by and the Solstice Foundation’s second project began. During that year we built two classrooms, a kitchen and ablution facilities. Through the ripple effect that we created, with an additional donation from Microgen, the original ‘chicken-hok’ on the site was converted into a further classroom and toilets, and numerous additional resources (food, books, toys, clothes, furniture) as well as plants for the grounds, were donated. Further funds allowed for the erection of a perimeter fence and gate.

The Solstice Foundation continued to contribute toward Indawo Yentsikelelo’s needs for the next eight years, but our financial support came to an end during 2010, although our on-the-ground support carried on intermittently. Towards the end of 2013 Muriel teamed up with Newkidz on the Block who carried out some much needed maintenance and fixed up her kitchen container.

In 2013 The Solstice Foundation contributed an amount of R1 595.00 to pay the outstanding SARS bill that was identified during its assistance with Indawo’s tax compliance.
